The Secret To Writing

“Yeah, I’d like to know that.” You said.
The secret is simply to sit down and do it, often. Practice and allow your inner flow to emerge.
Pick a time during the day or night, just for writing. Allow, at least, two hours. Turn the telephone and/or cell off. Have your coffee with you as well as anything else needed. This time is for you. Everyday return to your writing place. Make it a ritual.
Always keep a pen, journal, or recorder with you. Why? You have the means to save moments from an interesting event, major idea slams, or if a catchy title dawns. Jot down thoughts to keep from forgetting them. Also, you have a ready-writing-source.
In your writing place, pull-out notes to begin stories, essays, poetry, and yes, even non-fiction. One evening, in my neighborhood, teens were making animal sounds.
My imagination ignited the possibility of those teens, being used as pawns, trying to push someone physically into battle with them. Only, the someone would not lower him/herself to their level.
Are you uncovering and recognizing the secret to writing? My plot unfolds as the teens continue, and a main character quietly investigates. A second idea was of teen boys making noises to cover-up a crime.
In my journal, my notes read: -teen boys huddled, making animal noises–why? -urban teens waiting to do harm
The essay centers around urban living. Stress is a factor of urban life, but where you reside can filter in more unpleasantness. This fact relates directly to emotional well being.
A high crime or drug neighborhood, certainly, exposes one to more danger. Those factors can heighten feelings of anxiety. Life in the city brings population growth, higher noise level, and pollution.
It is essential one has an outlet…
Writing ideas can shape up into a version of the original. My first note, for example, could focus on teen boys saving a child from a burning house. The animal noise angle did not have to be used. It depends on how your imagination wants to create it.
My free verse poem follows. They are down. They strap heat. They gamble and cheat. They sell drugs. They war-n-tug. They drink with glee. They blink but don’t see. They continue to rob. They gather in a mob. They soon greet death while few are left.
A non-fiction chapter start uses the same vehicle to the writing secret. Decide on the theme.
My possible start comments on teens, my street, assembling at a certain house. It is not for religious or academic reasons. Sunshine or whipping wind, they flock there.
“Hey babe.” One called out to a female passing.
She never looked in his direction.
“Oh, it’s like that.” He spat, turned back to his posse.
I wondered where or if the funding for urban recreational facilities existed. Have those young men been on the streets too long for anything structured to help.
Perhaps, the prison system is the only corrective measure that could help now. Some important questions rushed to my mind. How did the young men come to do nothing all day? Where are the families? Was there intervention?
The secret code is to write, bring your journal-stuffed idea books, and master-pieces can be born.
