Reciprocal Responses Of Unwarranted Compliments In The Name Of Professionalism
By admin | April 3, 2008
Have you ever had someone shower you with compliments in an insincere way, assuming that might open up a door for them? Recently, someone tried this tactic with me, believing that somehow I would reciprocate and when I didn’t they made mention of it, as if to teach me a lesson about professionalism.
Indeed, there are simply too many people running around showering compliments, expecting compliments, when indeed they have not shown any reason to compliment. If you make mention of this, they generally advise you that at least you might have showed a “reciprocal respect” but why? Because they believe they are entitled to it - amazing if you dissect this scenario.
In my view “Respect” must be earned, therefore I generally do not accept compliments from others that I do not know. Often such compliments or payments of respect are used to butter someone up, in fact most books on communication and how to deal with people recommend complimenting; stating such things as it is incredible how far a little compliment will get you.
Well, you know I find it annoying and disingenuous, thus usually ignore it. This is why I only give such kudos if I am certain they are deserved. If you have little input from the individual then they cannot be properly estimated with any real probability, therefore reciprocation of respect should not be offered for you might be talking with or email corresponding with a fraudster, liar, or even an axe murderer, how would you know?
Flinging fake compliments around seems like silly “how is the weather” chit-chat. Now if you wish to talk about Weather Control Theory, then that is more apropos of course. Why all the human game playing, cut to the chase. If something is BS, call it as it lays, some folks may say this is unprofessional, but those who hide behind professionalism are the worst of fakers and tricksters. A foreigner might say; this is typical of Americans?
Interestingly enough, why should an American or anyone else put on a façade or play such time-wasting petty games? Americans can be stereotyped in many ways I suppose and yes, I see glimpses of such. Indeed many foreign cultures tend to take offense too easily. And if someone is interacting with an American, they must deal with the American style, just like when someone is interacting with another foreign culture on their turf, they must deal with them on their basis, if they wish to get anywhere.
Professional compliment dropping is simply a disgusting way of perpetuating white lies. If lying is your specialty and profession, by all means carry on, but for me, well, please do not contact me. Too harsh? Too bad, tired of the BS.
